The Three CrownsTrzy Korony (the Three Crowns) is the highest peak in the Main Pieniny. From the peak there is a magnificent view of the Tatras, Beskid Sądecki, Magura Spiska, the Gorce, Beskid Żywiecki and the Pieniny. The Three Crowns constitute of three calcareous peaks in shape of a crown. The highest of them are Okrąglica (982m above sea level), Pańska Skała (950m above sea level) and Płaska Skała (929m above sea level) also known under their regional names Wysoko Kaśka (Tall Cathy), Grubo Baśka (Fat Baśka) and Kudłato Maryna (Shaggy Mary). Okrąglica was out of reach till 1900 when the stone stairs and handrails were built. Only few people dared to reach the peak before 1900. The peak is 532m above the level of the Dunajec. On the top there is an observation platform the idea of which was given by the owner of the Czorsztyn Castle – Stanisław Drohojowski. The mountain was to be the hiding place of the local people protecting them from the Tartar rides and also a place of scientific experiments of one of the friars from the Red Monastery – friar Cyprian who wanted to try out his ' flying machines' jumping from the peak. Probably the primal name of the peak was Pieniny. The name Kronenberg appears in print in 1834, the Polish translation Korona in 1838 and 1842, and the Polish name Trzy Korony in 1860. The massif of the Three Crowns is the stand of an endemic plant the dandelion Taraxcacum pieninicum ( recently not found ), and the relic Chrysanthemum Zawadzkii. The mountain is so beautiful because of the impressive panorama from the peak, amazing plants growing on it, and its own charm that can be seen both from the top and the foot. You can reach the Three Crowns taking the route from Szczawnica, Krościenko, Czorsztyn or Sromowce Niżne. How to get there? To Sromowce Niżne you can get only by bus or by car. The nearest train station is in Nowy Targ from where you can get by bus or private buses to the villages mentioned above. From Szczawnica, Krościenko, and even Zakopane you can easily get the villages too. From Nowy Targ to Nowy Sącz there goes a Carpathian Road. Travelling from Nowy Sącz you can see the beautiful valley of the Dunajec, and travelling from Nowy Targ you can see the Czorsztyn Lake. If you are going from Nowy Targ and want to get to Sromowce Niżne you have to turn in a village called Krośnica and drive the country road belonging to the Pieniny National Park. Another interesting option is taking the road from Dębno to Niedzica and heading to the boarder crossing with Slovakia. Driving this road you can see the Czorsztyn Lake and visit some of the monuments in villages Dębno, Harklowa, Łopuszna, Frydman or Niedzica.
