Czorsztyn Lake – an artificial lake created on the Dunajec river covering the area of
1200 hectares, 12,5 km long, and with maximum width of 1,7 km. Despite the fact
that the working plans were made in the 19th century the works
started in the 60s of the 20th century. The localisation of the lake
was rising a lot of controversies among the citizens of nearby villages as well
as the ecologists. Today, when the lake exists we can tell that it protected
the region from several floods (the worst in 1997). On the other hand, it has
also influenced the natural environment of the place. Flooding of such a big
area of land is still a great lost for many people.
Without considering its influence on
the nature it has to be said that the Czorsztyn Lake has an enormous impact on
the development of tourism in this region. Nowadays it fits the panorama very
well and without knowing the facts it can even be called a natural lake.
Standing on the bank of the Czorsztyn Lake, looking at the Pieniny Mountains on
the west, the Gorce Mountains on the north, the Tatras on the south, observing
the waving surface of the water we can find ourselves in a place where time
goes slower than in a busy, noisy city.
